Instructions for using the Richmond OWL
In addition to our schedule of face-to-face appointment, tutors at the Writing Center provide online help to students in the School of Continuing Studies through our Online Writing Lab, or "OWL." Tutor Susan Herbert will monitor the OWL, read and comment on papers within 48 hours, and reply to writers. Susan will also be available for face-to-face appointments. All faculty members will receive reports about the tutorials from the tutors.

Only students in the School of Continuing Studies may post to the OWL at this time. Other students needing assistance with papers should make an appointment to visit the Writing Center by stopping by our lobby, located in the Administrative Wing of the Boatwright Library.

If you have questions about the OWL, please contact Joe Essid (jessid@richmond.edu). Susan Herbert can be contacted at sherbert@richmond.edu .

SCS students wishing to post papers to the OWL should read all instructions that follow:
  • Post messages under the current week's conference
  • Post any papers in MS Word format
  • Give tutors 48 hours to read and return papers
  • Use safe-computing practices of scanning all files for viruses before uploading them
  • Post a copy of the professor's assignment or summarize it in the message for the tutor
  • Understand Richmond's policies for commentary (we do not correct all mistakes, but provide holistic commentary on repeated errors and large rhetorical and structural problems). See our Frequently-asked questions list for more details
