Finding the correct wording to describe the experiment can be challenging when a student has had little experience with Chemistry lab reports. Here are a few terms and phrases used frequently in writing:

  • reactants - the original materials of the experiment
  • product - the final material of the experiment
  • mixture - the combination of two or more substances
  • solution - homogenous mixture of two or more substances
  • solvent - the dispersing medium of a solution
  • to become homogenous - when a mixture becomes uniform in composition
  • to collect " " - used to express when a substance is gathered during the experiment
  • to characterize - to use the physical properties or a method of spectroscopy, etc. to accurately identify a product
