The 25th Anniversary Meeting of The Popular Culture Association in the South and The American Culture Association in the South, Savannah, GA Additional Academic ActivitiesFall 2005 – Present Presidents College Associate (PCA) for Outdoor House Living-Learning Program a small-community oriented housing option. Participants live together in a co-ed dorm, take my 4-credit literature course ENGL 206 “Natural Reflections in Fiction and Non-Fiction,” and go on various outdoor adventures together, with the goal of enhanced student learning and engagement by transcending classroom and disciplinary boundaries and encouraging personal and intellectual exploration and growth. In this capacity I function as instructor, advisor and coordinator/leader of outdoor trips. Advisor for New Directions, “a collaboration among students of all sexualities to promote awareness through visibility, understanding through education, and appreciation through acceptance of sexual minorities” PCA for Westhampton College Lora Robins Court, Fall 2003-Spring 2004 Planned several events geared towards promoting intellectually engaged discussion outside the classroom with creative exercises such as a critical media analysis of Friends, a workshop on stress reduction and an examination of the historical-political subtext of Dr. Seuss’s The Butter Battle Book. Fall 2003 PCA work with RC Extreme UR freshman men’s outdoor challenge program Backpacking in Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness Area, and spelunking in West Virginia, as well as local Richmond hikes. November 12, 2003 Discussion Leader for St. Catherine/St. Christopher’s Parents’ Council Book Club conversation about Steyer’s The Other Parent, a book about media influence on children. September 13, 2003 Speaker at Women in the Know Conference hosted by WILL (Women Involved in Living & Learning): “Women and Media – Passive Consumerism or Critical Consciousness?” Summer 2003, supervised student intern Michelle Smith, developing MIRANDA hypertext Spring 2003, awarded ‘lifetime membership’ to WILL for my contributions to their program. Session teacher for WILL Colloquia (freshmen & senior seminars) on the topics of intentional community and sustainable lifestyles.
