Humor in the Writing Center

It may be hard to think of humor in terms of its use in the writing center because humor doesn't really seem like a "tool" or "strategy" that can be "used." By the time students are in college, they have a pretty good grasp on how to use humor in social settings. It may seem like second-nature and therefore unworthy of close examination. However, students may not know the best way to use humor in the writing center, even though life experience has made them experts at using humor in other settings. Because humor can either be a great asset in writing tutorials or it can completely backfire, tutors should "re-learn" how to use humor. Awareness of the benefits of and the potential problems with using humor in the writing center will help tutors use humor effectively.
