Conclusion
One of the main reasons a tutor come to work in the Writing Center is
because he or she cares about helping others achieve a higher standard of
writing excellence. When faced with a situation that cannot be easily corrected,
a writing tutor can sometimes begin to question their own ability to help
other. Learning disabilities are a serious problem that effects over almost
over 2.5 million Americans under the age of twenty-one, many of whom are
in college or soon will be (Famighetti, 217). As these students begin to
take advantage of the Writing Center, tutors must be prepared to take on
the challenge. At the same time a tutor is still a student and must realize
that there are limitations to their own abilities. A tutor must not allow
their concern for a job to get out of hand and effect their college career.
By learning to recognize the characteristics of a learning disabled student,
a tutor can better their lessons and strategies so that they can give every
student the best opportunity to succeed.
