The Number-Comment System

Some students are protective of their work; they consider marks all over their paper to be a violation of their property or even person. In my own experience I confess that sometimes when I get a paper back from a teacher that has a substantial amount of corrections and notes in the margins, I get a little offended because the teacher has made my hard work a dirty mess. Comments are written on a separate sheet of paper and each comment is paired with a number. The numbers are written on a draft in the places that pertain to the numbers' corresponding comments. This way, the student's draft is kept relatively neat and clean and teachers are not restricted to writing comments to fit in a one-inch margin!
