The questions I asked of 27 UR students are listed below:
How do you write a paper, any paper? What steps do you take to get to the
final draft that is turned in to your professor? Please describe any prewriting,
notes, outlines as well as how long the whole process takes you.
Have you ever visited UR's Writing Center, had a Writing Fellow for Core
or any other class, had a writing tutor in high school, or had others help
you revise your paper? What were your fears/anxieties, if any, going into
the situation? How did you come away from the situation, feeling better
or worse about your writing and your paper? Please include specific experiences,
if possible, both good and bad experiences.
I slightly varied the second set of questions when I surveyed 10 of my friends
at other schools:
Does your school have a writing center? Have you ever visited it, had a
writing tutor in high school, or had others help you revise your paper?
. . . .
I asked these questions out of curiosity of how my peers view the writing
center and what baggage they bring with them--like what processes they go
through before coming to the writing center and what they personally want
to get or need to get out of conferencing.
