Early Days in Arkansas | Pope, William | Little Rock: F.W. Allsopp | VIC | Microfiche | 1895 | Pope (1814-1895) wrote both his memoirs and accounts of incidents in the period when the humorists were at work. Begin any work with the helpful and long table of contents; the book includes accounts of duels, the "origin" of the Bowie Knife, riverboat travel, descriptions of early settlers, militia drills, and court cases. |
Journal of Calista Cralle Long | Long, Calista C. | Fayetteville, WVA: Armistead Rosser Long | VIC | 1940 | The diary is not that remarkable, although it does provide a sense of the difficulties encountered (broken axles, bad weather, cold and fatigue) from someone who experienced the events first hand in 1836-37.
A Narrative of the Life of James Pearse, in Two Parts | Pearse, James | Rutland, VT: W. Fay, 1825 | VIC | 1825 | Pearse attacks slavery and discourages citizens from northern states from emmigration to the South, since Pearse found the climate unhealthy and morals questionable. Pearse focuses on his family's struggles in Mississippi and Louisiana, where he lived for 5 years. Good section on agriculture.
Pioneer Days in Arkansas | Chester, Samuel H. | Richmond: Presbyterian Committee of Publications | VIC | 1927 | A santized account of frontier life that omits the types of material seen in the work of the frontier humorists. Chester based his work upon family documents and personal recollection. Apparently, the town he describes had no liquor or even fighting. Chester's account makes no "apology" for slavery, then discusses several good slaves who served his family. |
